聖本篤院長
聖人在公元480年左右，生於意大利諾西亞。在羅馬受教育，18歲棄俗，在蘇比亞各度隱修生活。聖人本意是獨修，但後來，德名遠播，欲從學者，接踵而來，遂改變初衷，為了善與人同，遂接收生徒，組成隱修團體，建立了12座修院，開創西方隱修院的模式，並以祈禱和勞動，作隱修生活的重點。
後往加西諾山潛修，建立著名的隱修院。這隱修院，後來更成為西方道德文化的搖籃。他撰寫會規（聖本篤會規），以日課祈禱作為隱修生活的時序，平衡祈禱、勞動、學習、獨修與團體生活，為西方各處隱修院所遵循，故此，人稱他為西方隱修之祖。
聖人於547年3月21日安逝。但自第八世紀以來，許多地區都在7月11日舉行他的紀念日。
本篤的靈修將每天的生活分為「祈禱」和「勞動」，後人在此之上加入「靈閱」(閱讀聖經和聖書)，即「祈禱、勞動、靈閱」。

Saint Benedict, Abbot
Born in Norcia, Italy, and educated in Rome, St. Benedict (480-547) lived a solitary life in mountainous Subiaco for three years. He later organized twelve monasteries; the monks devoted themselves to prayer and work. In the abbey of Monte Cassino, which he founded, he wrote his Rule, which wonderfully combines the Roman genius with the monastic wisdom of the Christian East. Pope Paul VI proclaimed him Patron of Europe because of his influence on the formation of Christendom.

O God, who made the Abbot Saint Benedict
an outstanding master in the school of divine service,
grant, we pray,
that, putting nothing before love of you,
we may hasten with a loving heart
in the way of your commands.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
